At Home at the End of the World
name Zahir al-Jamil alignment Angel age 18 birthday December 1st, 1980 family Mother Yasmina and Father Joseph, both deceased
The Powers that be
Zahir dubbed his power "the hell box". He can look into a person's heart and see their deepest fears and desires, then set up a box of psychic energy around them based on those fears and desires. As long as the person is trapped in the box, they are stuck in the fantasy world that Zahir creates, basically rendering them immobile and unable to see the reality around them. They are trapped inside their minds and must remain so until Zahir takes them out or they find the end. In addition, he has some mild ESP abilities that are also side effects of his power, allowing him to read other people's emotions to a degree.
When You Were Young
Zahir grew up in Syria, the only child of a pair of loving parents. He went to a superb private school in Damascus, his parents having no short supply of monetary funds due to their lucrative political positions, and was educated in not only English, Arabic, and other foreign languages, but also Hebrew, philosophy, geography, theology, and the different sciences. He made superb marks and the teachers were continually praising his intelligence, as well as his impeccable manner. Zahir was expected to follow in his parents' footsteps, a fate that he both expected and anticipated with relish. On one fateful day, both of his parents were sent to Jerusalem for a diplomacy meeting. They decided to take their son along, as if to turn it into a family outing—the three of them were very close and the parents hated leaving him at home alone. While Zahir was out at the bazaar and his parents were at their meeting, the embassy they were staying at was bombed by anti-Arab Israelis, killing both parents. He returned to the hotel with his caretaker later that day, and was utterly devastated at the sight of the building engulfed in flames. He could hear the screams of the people locked inside and his powers started to murmur inside of him at this time. All of the pain and anguish of the dying inside the embassy slowly dripped into his heart and have long since lodged themselves into a permanent place in his psyche. Zahir was only 13 years old. Since the bombing, Zahir has honed his powers so that they are totally under his control, although not impenetrable, as explained earlier. He simply grew tired of seeing humans kill each other while also destroying the planet in the process. Zahir, a Muslim like his parents, (which also may have been one of the reasons for the bombing) believes his powers to be a gift from Allah, and so he embraces his powers, though they have warped his personality in some ways. (heavily abridged for your sanity)
The Animal I Have Become
It is impossible to summarize Zahir in a few words. Deep down, he truly is a kind person. He believes in the destruction of mankind not because he hates mankind, but he believes that their deaths would be out of mercy. However, the discovery of his powers and the deaths of his parents have turned him into a very bitter, sarcastic person. Though he still secretly has goals and aspirations to be just like his parents, who were peace-loving, nice people, he buries these dreams deep inside of himself and refuses to acknowledge them. There are, thus, two Zahir's. There is the externally-shown Zahir, who is cold, unfeeling, and quiet, and there is the inner Zahir, who is passionate, emphatic, and still full of hope. The latter is often hidden except in periods of great stress of Zahir. His lack of ability to confide in others is probably his only weakness, which goes along with his inability to admit certain things to himself. He often appears to display symptoms of Multiple Personality Disorder because his personality conflicts in so many places. (Kind/unfeeling, cold/passionate) Zahir has a strict honesty policy. He is blunt to a fault, not believing in the use of euphemisms or metaphors to describe circumstances or how he feels. In his opinion, anyone who cannot handle the truth is better off not knowing it. He will withhold information, therefore, but prefers to not outright lie to people. This lack of tact may seem somewhat unfeeling to those who are not used to him, but it is merely his personality and probably will never change. He also is somewhat stubborn. He lives by a code that he's made for himself and if ordered to do something that goes against that code, he won't obey. 1. Death is only a reprieve. 2. The innocent should never be boxed. 3. Trust none, be hurt by none. 4. There is nothing to fear but fear itself. One of his strengths, however, are that he is very intelligent. Possessing a wonderful education, Zahir lives in Jerusalem able to speak Hebrew, which makes him stand out less amongst the crowd. Not only that, his reading repertoire gives him a lot of creativity and logic, making him able to think quickly in tight situations. He is very good at reading people, both because of his powers and because of his inherent emphatic nature, and uses this to his advantage. He is calm under pressure, but snaps easily at the mention of his parents.
Frozen on the Outside
Zahir has semi-long, spiky black hair, which is usually covered up by a helmet complete with goggles to protect his eyes from the relentless sun, wind, and sand common in the Middle East. His skin is tan as a result of his being out in the sun for a long time for the jobs that he does, and he is a little less than 6 feet tall. He also tends to slouch, making him look shorter than he really is. In addition, Zahir usually does not make eye contact with others, especially when talking to people he doesn't know. This makes him come across as insincere and a little sneaky to others, though this usually is not the case. If anything, Zahir is wholly blunt and honest with his opinions.
